At a glance

A Save the Date is an early announcement asking guests to keep a date free. Include your names, the day and the city if confirmed, and explain that a full invitation will follow. You do not need to invent a start time or an address you have not decided yet.

What Save the Date means

A Save the Date is a short announcement sent before the full invitation, giving the people you plan to invite a chance to keep the day free.

It does not need to describe the whole celebration. Its job is to communicate a confirmed date and explain that details will follow. It can be a card, an image or a digital message.

How it differs from an invitation

The early announcement and the full invitation serve different purposes. Do not present a tentative start time as final just to fill an empty space.

Save the DateFull invitation
Announces the date in advance.Explains how to attend the event.
Can include a city without an exact address.Brings together venues, times and maps.
Explains that more information will follow.Includes RSVP instructions where needed.

A Save the Date is not an attendance confirmation either. If you need to know who will attend, explain later how and by when guests should respond.

When to send it

For weddings, The Knot recommends sending Save the Dates six to eight months ahead. Treat this as guidance rather than a universal rule, considering travel, holidays and your guests’ circumstances.

Confirm the date and who will be invited before sending your announcement. If the event is close and the essential details are ready, you can send the full invitation instead of creating two almost identical messages.

What information to include

Use this list as a starting point and adapt it to your celebration. Minted’s Save the Date guide also distinguishes the city from the exact venue.

  • The names of the people celebrating.
  • The date, with the month written out to avoid ambiguity.
  • The city, if confirmed and useful for travel planning.
  • A line such as “Full invitation to follow.”
  • A photo, if you would like a personal touch.

You do not need to add a venue, start time or dress code you have not decided yet. It is better to promise more information than to publish invented details and correct them later.

Three wording examples to make your own

These original examples use fictional names and dates. Replace them with the details of your celebration.

Simple and friendly

Sofia and Thomas. We’re getting married! Save April 24, 2027. Buenos Aires. We’ll share all the details soon.

With a heartfelt welcome

There’s a date we want to share with you: April 24, 2027. Sofia and Thomas. Keep this day free to celebrate with us. Your full invitation will follow.

For a Sweet 16 party

My Sweet 16 has a date! I’m Valentina, and I’d love you to save May 22, 2027 to celebrate with me. The venue and start time will follow soon.

How to share it clearly

If you send it through WhatsApp or email, accompany the image or link with a line explaining that it is an early announcement. Send it to people you actually intend to invite, rather than using it as a poll to decide your guest list.

Avoid publishing sensitive information. Images and links can be forwarded. If the date changes, contact the people who received your announcement directly instead of assuming they will open it again.

If you reserve the date in your own calendar before a start time is confirmed, use an all-day event. There is no need to invent a time.

What you can prepare in Invitevent today

You can explore the designs, choose a photo and prepare your wording in a draft. Saving is manual, so save your changes before leaving the editor.

Publishing in Invitevent requires a title and a valid date; venue and time are optional. Leave locations empty or remove the rows to send your Save the Date. Without a time, the calendar reserves the whole day and the countdown stays hidden. Later, add the details and publish again using the same link.

Once the details are confirmed, follow the guide to creating a digital invitation. For weddings, also check what to include in your wedding invitation and the help guide to saving and publishing.
